Hazel Savage says, “with millions of creators posting new music to sites globally, the job of listening to all has become impossible. Ryan Walter discovered Lewis Capaldi. Ryan used to spend six months listening to new artists on SoundCloud and founded Lewis. He used to listen to songs for seven hours a day, with 500 tabs open at a time, listening to each track for 10 seconds. 

Capaldi’s rise to fame is a wonderful tale, but the trust the work goes into finding artists is never recognized. Lewis’s story teaches us many things; it’s that there is talent, and there they can quickly go unnoticed and not listed too. And to fix the problem, Musiio has created a new piece of technology that is called a Hit Potential Algorithm. 

The AI-based algorithm claims to classify and categorize new music. Besides, it helps to measure hit potential and isolate those tracks most likely to properly blow up, no matter who or where they are from. Savage, talking about the new technology, says, “Our technology processes whole audio files and extracts features from it.” She further added, “We train the AI to look for patterns.”

The Hit Potential Algorithm is a new product that has been in R&D for the last few years. The testing was in-house, but like other products, it was 90 to 99% accurate. Hazel Savage says, “we never launch products that do not do what we claim. Our reputation is critical for us, and we hire skilled AI developers, and everything is developed in-house.”

Adding further, she said, at the initial testing with Hit Potential Algorithm, we took ten viral hits from YouTube, hid them into the database of 10 K tracks from the Free Music Archive, and asked the AI to search the top 20 hits. And we succeed in finding 9 out of 10 viral hits in the top 20. 

The company is primarily focusing on decreasing inefficiencies for music curation using AI by augmenting the valuable work of human curators. In simple terms, it aims to give those without the power of Spotify the possibility to automate or partially automate a heavy lifting when it comes to scouring through music.

“Musiio will not replace the need to have people listening to music,” Savage says. “But it’s not possible to delete the inefficiencies.” Musiio reached a USD 10 million valuation in July after raising a price in a fundraising round with the participation of Francois Arbour, Paul Kempe, and record company Tileyard Group. Presently the company is looking to expand its service to the UK and the rest of Europe.
